SHORTER WALKS (2-3 miles) AND A PUB LUNCH

Group leader: Roger May

e-mail: shorterwalks@newmillsu3a.org.uk

Meetings: monthly: 2nd Tuesday 10:30 am
And: 4th Friday 10:30 am

Venue: variable

The popularity of the Shorter Walks group means it was fully subscribed, with a waiting list to join. The solution offered, is to organise two walks per month instead of one. The existing meetings on the second Tuesday of each month will remain, with an additional meeting on the fourth Friday.

Start time will usually be 10h30, allowing about two hours' activity before enjoying a pub lunch. Conscious of our Carbon footprint, the aim is to make use, wherever possible, of Public Transport to arrive at and depart from the assembly points – details of which will be supplied by email a couple of weeks before each event, with a description of the route and a what3words reference. (A free App for your smartphone.) Others may wish to car share, making their own arrangements.

Walking more slowly than people at the peak of fitness, this group is for those people who would like to get out into the country, but who feel they may not be up to a longer walk taking them up to more strenuous levels. As a result, we look for walks which, while not completely level (almost impossible to find in Derbyshire), have a more limited hill climbing requirement. Sensible footwear and suitable outdoor clothing (possibly walking poles as well) are advised, as some footpaths can be muddy or uneven in all but the best weather – and many of us will turn out whatever the weather.

Experience demonstrates that no group will stay together throughout a walk – the abilities of each member may vary considerably. Some tend to forge ahead, whilst others lag behind. This is normal. To accommodate this inevitable disparity, the walks will be designed with cut-outs, shortcuts and alternatives. It will be left to individuals to decide how much, or how little of the circuit they feel capable of achieving - the aim being to allow the slower members to catch up or even overtake the faster ones, thereby arriving at the destination more or less together, and thereafter enjoying a convivial lunch in a nearby pub.
